Keys after her victory over Swiatek: "The third set was a real battle".
Madison Keys is in the Australian Open final. The 29-year-old American showed her mental toughness to topple Iga Swiatek (5-7, 6-1, 7-6) and reach her second Grand Slam final, more than seven years after the last one at the 2017 US Open.
Against Aryna Sabalenka, she will attempt to win the biggest title of her career.
Ahead of Saturday's final against the two-time title-holder and world number 1, Keys savored her success against the Pole on court, moments after qualifying.
"It was a very high-level match. Iga played so well, I had the feeling I had to stay in the game in the second set.
Then the third set was a real battle. To be in the final here is incredible, and I can't wait for Saturday.
I had the impression that I was on a good run despite losing the first set. In the deciding set, there were ups and downs, both for her and for me.
We had so many opportunities that we didn't seize, and she had a match point. At one point, I felt like I'd completely forgotten about the score and was just running on every point.
In the end, we also had to control our nerves, as we were both pushing each other to the limit.
In the tie-break, it was the one who managed to get that last point, the player who was going to be slightly better than the other, who was going to win.
I'm very happy to have crossed the finish line first," said Keys after the match.
