Keys: "I would be lying if I told you I don’t have expectations for myself."
Madison Keys has not played a single match since her title at the Australian Open in January. Now ranked 5th in the world for the first time in her career, the 30-year-old American will debut her new status at the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells, where she will enter the fray in the second round against Jessica Bouzas Maneiro or Anastasia Potapova.
Speaking at a press conference before the start of the tournament, Madison Keys, who has been absent due to a leg injury, admits to having even higher expectations as she prepares to compete in this prestigious California tournament on home soil.
"I would be lying if I told you, heading into this tournament, that I don’t have expectations for myself after starting the season this way.
But, at the same time, it’s really important for me and my team to remind ourselves how we got here and what we were doing to prepare well. And I think it will be very important to go back to that and stick to it.
I firmly believe there needs to be a balance between being honest and having higher expectations, but I don’t think anyone truly thrives when there’s such a radical shift in mindset so quickly after success.
Now, I’ve spent more than half my life on the tour. So I can’t really complain when someone calls me a veteran.
But I also think people forget a little how young I still am, despite having seen me play for so long," Keys assured.
