Kyrgios very doubtful for the Australian Open
The Australian Open 2025 is fast approaching. With just a few hours to go before the first Grand Slam of the season, the players are fine-tuning their preparations in order to be ready for the start of the tournament in Melbourne.
Back on the courts in Brisbane after a year and a half's absence, Nick Kyrgios was unable to make the most of his home tournament.
After suffering a wrist injury in his opening match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, the former world No. 13 was able to finish the match and also played doubles with Novak Djokovic.
Nevertheless, Kyrgios, who had announced his wish to play in the Australian Open, is still unsure whether he will be able to keep his place.
On his Instagram account, the 29-year-old said he had undergone tests in recent hours, but not to treat his wrist.
"Unfortunately, I won't be able to play this Thursday, January 9 against my good friend Novak Djokovic (an exhibition match in Melbourne). I had an ultrasound which revealed a grade 1 abdominal strain.
I'm going to rest and do everything I can to be fit for the Australian Open," Kyrgios wrote on Instagram.
Quarter-finalist in 2015 in Melbourne, Nick Kyrgios hasn't played in the Australian tournament since 2022. He lost to eventual finalist Daniil Medvedev in the second round that year.
