Lys denounces harassers on the WTA tour: "Some get the hotel address and room number"
World number 40, Eva Lys, discussed in an interview the dangers of life as a professional player, between harassers during tournaments and hateful messages on social media after matches.
Lys continues to climb the WTA rankings. The 23-year-old German player, this week's world number 40, gave an interview in recent hours in which she discusses the harasser who regularly follows her during WTA tournaments.
After Emma Raducanu and Iga Swiatek, who have also had to deal with these individuals, she is thus a third player to publicly denounce their behavior. The Kiev, Ukraine native also discussed the numerous messages she receives from gamblers on her social media after every loss.
For reference, a study conducted by the WTA last year revealed that over 450 players systematically receive insults and that 8,000 comments were considered "violent" by the governing body, and few players escape it.
"Some harassers get the hotel address, and even the room numbers. It has crossed all boundaries. As for the hateful messages on social media, it's a phenomenon that hasn't been talked about enough for far too long.
If you don't talk about it publicly, nothing will change. After every loss since I was 16, I receive hundreds of messages. Unfortunately, it's part of my everyday life," stated Lys in an interview with Die Zeit.
