Michelsen Dominates Tien in Toronto to Reach First Masters 1000 Quarterfinal

An all-American clash kicked off the round of 16 in Toronto.
It featured two newcomers at this stage of a Masters 1000 tournament: Alex Michelsen, ranked 34th in the world, and Learner Tien, ranked 61st. The two players, both participants in last year's Next Gen Finals, faced off for the second time this season after their meeting in Houston.
Just like on the Texan clay, Michelsen emerged victorious in straight sets (6-3, 6-3). The match was marked by a high number of unforced errors (69 in total), likely due to the stakes of securing a first-ever Masters 1000 quarterfinal berth.
Overall more solid than his compatriot, Michelsen will return to the court in Toronto on Monday to face either Casper Ruud or Karen Khachanov, with his sights set on reaching the semifinals. Tien can take solace in achieving a new career-high ranking, virtually climbing to 55th.
