Gaël Monfils faced Pedro Martinez in the first round in Auckland. Trailing 6-1, 5-2, the Frenchman was in dire straits.

However, he came back to win 1-6, 7-6, 6-3.

Also trailing 4-1 in the tiebreak of the second set, Monfils found the resources not to lose the match.

In a post-match interview, he said: "You (the public) helped me a lot. Thank you very much for your energy.

I've been on the ATP circuit for over 20 years. I've been 6-1 down on many occasions. I have experience in this field.

You have to believe in yourself. It wasn't good tennis at first.

I tried every point. It's not pretty, but you have to put the ball in the court. At some point, things improve. Then you have to seize the opportunity."

In the second round, Monfils will face Jan-Lennard Struff, who defeated Bu Yunchaokete.

Tennis: the little-known truths about the offseason, between rest, stress and physical survival
Tennis: the little-known truths about the offseason, between rest, stress and physical survival

Between total disconnection and intensive work, the offseason is a crucial period for preparing for a long season on tour.

Exhausted but omnipresent stars, ever-longer tournaments and exhibitions that have become a business in their own right: tennis is revealing its deepest contradictions, torn between spectacle and physical survival.
The impact of the war on tennis in Ukraine: financial aid, foundations, governing bodies and all‑round headaches
The impact of the war on tennis in Ukraine: financial aid, foundations, governing bodies and all‑round headaches

Since February 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Ukrainian sport has been heavily affected by human, structural and economic losses. Tennis has, of course, not been spared. While Ukrainian athletes have had to rethink their entire organization, an entire country, behind the scenes, has had to adapt and change its training conditions. This extends all the way to the highest level, where professional players have spoken out, trying as best they can to help their nation.

Omnipresent cameras, line judges on the verge of extinction, mistakes that persist nonetheless: technology fascinates as much as it divides. Tennis, at a crossroads, is still searching for its balance between progress and emotion.

As we move to the end of this month and also closing out the year I am wishing all of those following me a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy New Year.

Let's make that wish for all 2000 plus players hoping for 5 wins each day. Hoping ŵhen we open the results page to see all green, and no red. And especially NO CANCELED matches.

From me and my rotti JAZ, I bid you all good night, and see you in...

why did tennis tonic void predictions on the match between Chwalinska and Huergo at the Quito tournament? The match was played to completion and on time. If TT feels the match is one sided, and of course it was, then don't put it up for prediction. This is getting irritating.

The finals are here, and we scramble for the best finish. I've been chasing "King" all year and I was able to shrink the spread a little. Skelp is also closing the gap.

Seasons best to all the regulars in our league.

Will you all be back in the new year.?

Steffi Graf completed a Golden Slam (not just a career Grand Slam) when she was 19. She is the only person to accomplish that, winning the four majors plus Olympic gold the same calendar year.
