Monfils: "The slightest serious injury and it's all over".
Gaël Monfils, 38, will be the last active French player in the "Mousquetaires" group after Richard Gasquet's retirement.
It's a longevity we wouldn't necessarily have imagined a few years ago, given that Monfils' career has been defined by injuries that have kept him out of so many tournaments.
Although the years are passing, the Parisian doesn't seem to want to say goodbye to professional tennis just yet, as he confided to AFP: "There's no date. It'll happen, I just don't know when.
I managed to come back (in 2023) because I was successful. You can have success once, twice or three times, but at some point you know it's all over.
The slightest serious injury and I know it's all over for me.
I try to play as long as physically possible. There are a lot of 40-year-old athletes who perform at the highest level."
Although a competitor at heart, Monfils also confessed that he was not afraid of the end of his career: "I love tennis, I love competition, but it's not an end in itself.
I'm not necessarily afraid of retirement. I want to discover new things.
