Muchova starts her grass season with a win and reassures after two months without success
Karolina Muchova is back to winning ways on the WTA tour. Competing this week in the WTA 500 tournament at Queen’s, which is hosting its first women’s edition since 1973, the Czech player, ranked 14th in the world and seeded 6th in London, has made a perfect start to her grass season.
In a match that began on Monday but was interrupted at one set all, the 2023 Roland-Garros finalist and two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist (in 2019 and 2021) finished the job on Tuesday.
Facing Australian qualifier Maddison Inglis, Muchova eventually found the solution to break her opponent in the first game of the third set before maintaining her advantage until the end, winning in three sets (7-6, 3-6, 6-4 in 2h27).
Despite her inconsistency on serve (12 aces, 9 double faults), the former world No. 8 advanced to the round of 16, where she will face Tatjana Maria.
This victory will be a relief for Muchova, who missed almost the entire clay season due in part to a left wrist injury.
The injury also troubled her during her first-round match at Roland-Garros, where she lost to Alycia Parks (6-3, 2-6, 6-1). This marks the Czech player’s first win since March 21, when Victoria Azarenka retired in the second round in Miami (6-0 ret.).
