Navarro after her title in Mérida: "It's another step in the right direction"

Emma Navarro won her second career title on the WTA tour last week. The 23-year-old American triumphed at the WTA 500 tournament in Mérida, defeating Petra Martic (6-1, 6-2), Zeynep Sonmez (6-4, 6-2), and Elina Avanesyan (6-3, 6-3) before dominating qualifier Emiliana Arango in the final without dropping a single game (6-0, 6-0).
After her title, the semifinalist of the last US Open and current world No. 8 spoke out and admitted she never imagined being in this position one day.
"I think I've never been good at projecting myself into the future, so I would never have imagined playing a final in this category of tournaments and winning a WTA 500.
I did good things, but I wasn't better than her. Emiliana had an excellent week, reaching the final after coming through qualifying. A 6-0, 6-0 win shows that there isn't just one thing to fix.
I need to improve my serve, my return, my movement, and the speed of my shots. It was a great week, and it's another step in the right direction.
It's nice to see American tennis having very good results lately, with players in the top 5 and top 10, but also having players performing well on the men's side," she told Tennis Up To Date.
