Navarro, overwhelmed by Bouzas Maneiro, exits in the first round at Roland-Garros
This Monday afternoon, Court Suzanne-Lenglen witnessed one of the first big surprises in the early stages of the 2025 Roland-Garros women's draw. Seeded number 9, Emma Navarro was virtually non-existent in her opening match.
Facing Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, the 68th-ranked player in the world, the American, who reached the semi-finals of the US Open last year, suffered a sweeping defeat without winning her serve once. With 4 winners against 23 unforced errors, Navarro was off her game and exits prematurely from Roland-Garros this year.
Having reached the round of 16 last year, where she was defeated by Aryna Sabalenka, the New York native won't progress past the first round this time. The Spaniard, on the other hand, won in under an hour (6-0, 6-1 in 57 minutes) and advances to the second round where she will face Diane Parry or Robin Montgomery.
Having lost to Jana Fett in her opening match last year, Bouzas Maneiro sees the draw opening up with the elimination of a top 10 player and can dream of progressing even further. She might face Beatriz Haddad Maia in the third round and potentially Madison Keys in the round of 16 if she continues her winning form.
