Nishikori withdraws from Rome tournament
Kei Nishikori began his clay-court season in Houston before competing last week at the Madrid Masters 1000, where he reached the second round before losing to Denis Shapovalov.
However, the Japanese player had already withdrawn from several events in April, skipping the ATP 500 in Barcelona and the Estoril Challenger. Struggling with a shoulder issue for several weeks, he has now decided to pull out of the Rome Masters 1000, which starts next week.
This withdrawal could simply be a precautionary measure to ensure he is fully fit for Roland-Garros.
Daniel Altmaier benefits from this withdrawal, gaining direct entry into the main draw.
