Monfils withdraws from the Rome Masters 1000
In the coming days, the Rome Masters 1000 will see the return of Jannik Sinner to competition. Suspended since February, the world No. 1 will play in front of his home crowd and hopes to quickly regain the form he displayed last year.
However, the tournament organizers will have to manage without several top players for the 2025 edition. After the withdrawals of Novak Djokovic and Kei Nishikori, Gaël Monfils has now also pulled out of the Rome tournament.
Present in Madrid last week, the 38-year-old Frenchman won his first-round match against Borna Gojo before withdrawing ahead of his clash with Andrey Rublev. The Auckland tournament champion, feeling unwell, chose not to take the court.
Rinky Hijikata, meanwhile, benefits from Monfils' absence in the Italian capital by gaining direct entry into the main draw. Gaël Monfils has not won a single match in Rome since 2012, when he defeated Alex Bogomolov Jr. in the first round (6-4, 6-1).
