Overlooked by the US Open, Wawrinka Receives a Wildcard from a French Tournament
After being denied a wild-card for the US Open, Stan Wawrinka has received an invitation to participate in the Rennes Challenger scheduled for September 8-14.
At 40 years old, the three-time Grand Slam winner has been competing on the secondary circuit for many months now. A recent semifinalist in Cancún (defeated by Tirante), the Swiss player, ranked 146th in the ATP, hopes to perform well in the Breton tournament.
Led by Nicolas Mahut since 2021, this Challenger 100 will host other French players such as Mannarino, Gaston, and Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
It is worth noting that the Rennes tournament, established in 2006, is played on indoor hard courts and saw Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as its first winner. Tsonga, who was 21 years old at the time, received an invitation from the organizers and went on to win the final against Germany's Tobias Summerer (1-6, 7-5, 7-5).
