Pegula Holds Her Ground Against Tomljanovic and Advances to the Third Round of the WTA 1000 in Beijing

On a day marked by the defeat of many seeded players, Jessica Pegula got the job done in her opening match at the WTA 1000 in Beijing.
Jessica Pegula will indeed be present in the third round in Beijing. The American, ranked 7th in the world, made her debut in the Chinese capital this year and faced Ajla Tomljanovic.
The Australian had eliminated Yuliia Starodubtseva (7-6, 6-2), last year's quarterfinalist, in the first round, but the level of competition rose significantly in this match. Returning to the 94th spot this week, Tomljanovic hoped to pose challenges for her opponent.
The two players have already faced each other twice this year, first in the semifinals in Austin (6-1, 4-6, 6-3) and then in the third round in Charleston (6-3, 6-2), two tournaments that Pegula went on to win.
In this match in Beijing, Pegula had no difficulty qualifying. Against a valiant but limited opponent (who failed to earn a single break point), Pegula controlled the match from start to finish.
In the end, Pegula won without faltering (6-0, 6-3 in 1 hour and 1 minute) and advances to the third round, where she will face the winner of the upcoming match between Emma Raducanu and Cristina Bucsa.
A semifinalist at the US Open and a finalist in the BJK Cup with the United States recently, the 31-year-old player is confident and hopes to build momentum as the tournament progresses.
