WTA 1000 Beijing: Swiatek and Andreeva Swift in Their Opening Matches
Two top 5 players took to the courts in Beijing early in the day. Iga Swiatek and Mirra Andreeva, heavy favorites in their respective matches, lived up to expectations and advanced to the third round of this WTA 1000 event.
The Russian, ranked 5th in the world, was the first to step onto the center court against Zhu Lin, ranked 253rd and a wildcard entry. Without overexerting herself, the 18-year-old player secured the victory in two quick sets (6-2, 6-2 in 1 hour and 18 minutes) and advanced to the round of 16, where she will face Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who upset Dayana Yastremska (7-5, 6-4).
As for Iga Swiatek, who recently clinched her third title of the season at the WTA 500 in Seoul, she faced little difficulty in qualifying. Against another Chinese player, Yuan Yue, the Polish world No. 2 wrapped up the match even faster than Andreeva before her (6-0, 6-3 in 1 hour and 14 minutes).
Swiatek advances to the third round, where she will face Camila Osorio. The Colombian emerged victorious from her duel with Anna Kalinskaya (6-1, 4-6, 6-4).
Also notable in the early matches was Emma Navarro’s qualification against Elena-Gabriela Ruse (6-3, 7-6), while Victoria Mboko, who triumphed at the WTA 1000 in Montreal, suffered an early exit against Anastasia Potapova (7-6, 7-5).
