Ranked 62nd in the world this week, the Australian took advantage of an event generally favorable to surprise epics to reach the final.

Perfectly mastering the transition from clay to hard court, the 25-year-old had the most accomplished week of his career.

Excellent in his game and bluffingly realistic on the important points, Popyrin has now beaten four members of the top 20, including two top 10 players.

With successive victories over Shelton, Dimitrov, Hurkacz and Korda, he can now look forward to an unexpected first Matsers 1000 title, against Rublev in the final.

Questioned in the press conference, he didn't hold back his pleasure: "This is probably the best week of my career so far.

I think the quality of the opponents I've beaten is the reason.

It's not just because I'm in the final of a Masters, but also because of the quality of my opponents and the way I played.

I think it shows that all my hard work is paying off."
