Pouille reflects on working with Mauresmo: "She was the coach I needed".
After a period of depression, Lucas Pouille is trying to return to the highest level.
The Frenchman, former Australian Open semi-finalist in 2019 and 10th in the world, has fallen out of the top 100 in recent days, but is gradually rediscovering the pleasure of playing.
In an interview with CLAY, he looks back on his collaboration with Amélie Mauresmo, who coached him from 2018 to 2020 and had enabled him to achieve very good results.
"I don't know why women coaching men isn't something common. For me, it doesn't matter whether the person is a man or a woman.
It's all about knowledge, and Amélie was the right person at the right time. She gave me something extra in my tennis.
I don't care what kind of people make up my team. I just want people who can bring good things to my game and my career.
I need positive physical and mental energy. In my opinion, Amélie was the right coach for me.
Maybe we'll see more women coaching men in the future, but it's true that in the opposite direction, it doesn't work like that.
In the WTA, a lot of men coach women players, but not the other way round. Maybe things will change in the end," says Pouille.
