Invited by the organizers of the Abu Dhabi tournament, Emma Raducanu lost in the 1st round to Marketa Vondrousova (6-3, 6-4), who had just returned from injury.

Despite nine double faults and a poor conversion percentage on break points (4/14), the Czech managed to control the exchanges and win after an hour and a half of play.

She will play No.4 seed Yulia Putintseva in the next round.

As for Raducanu, this was her third defeat this season and second in a row in the 1st round of a tournament, after Singapore last week.

I propose the following changes to the rules:

1...a walķover will not be a loss. We have no control of player's health. If he or she is entered in a contest we expect them to play.

2...an incomplete match is not a loss. If a player forfeits we pick another match if there are more to choose.

3...this also applies if TT cancels a match. TT will not take hours to decide an outcome.
