Record - Cilic, the lowest-ranked player in history, ahead of Hewitt, to win an ATP title
Nobody expected Marin Cilic to have such a party this week, not even himself. After a 2023 season almost without playing (2 matches) and after undergoing surgery on his right knee last spring, the Croatian won the Hangzhou ATP 250 tournament on Tuesday. Just a few days before his 36th birthday (he'll be turning 36 on Saturday), he was ranked just 770th in the ATP rankings.
The former world No. 3 and 2014 US Open winner thus becomes the lowest-ranked player in history (since 1990) to win an ATP title. He dethrones Australian Lleyton Hewitt, who was ranked 550th when he won the Adelaide tournament in 1998.
