Shanghai: Medvedev Avenges Loss to Learner Tien After Nearly 3-Hour Duel
Surprised twice this season by the young American Learner Tien, Daniil Medvedev set the record straight in an electrifying duel in Shanghai. A hard-fought victory after nearly 3 hours of battle.
One might have thought he would be unsettled by an opponent who had already beaten him twice in 2025, at the Australian Open and then in Beijing. But this time, Daniil Medvedev emerged victorious.
Facing the rising talent Learner Tien, the former world number 1 bared his claws, overpowering his opponent in a gripping 2-hour and 52-minute arm-wrestle to advance to the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters 1000.
The match was a battle of endurance, nerves, and strategy. But in the key moments, it was the Russian who came out on top. With this qualification, Medvedev reaches his 24th Masters 1000 quarterfinal, his third this season after Indian Wells and Madrid.
Next goal: the quarterfinals, with a clash against a world top 10 player: Australian Alex de Minaur.
