"She was missing volleys and was afraid to come to the net," Mouratoglou reveals the lie that helped Serena Williams win Wimbledon
In the *Tennis Insider Club* podcast, coach Patrick Mouratoglou shared an anecdote about former player Serena Williams. As the American entered the Wimbledon tournament filled with doubts, the 55-year-old decided to lie to her to restore her confidence:
"Serena was playing at Wimbledon. She was missing volleys and was afraid to come to the net early in the tournament, so after a match, I told her: 'When I see a short ball, I'm completely at ease—I sleep soundly because you win 80% of your points at the net.' That wasn’t true, but she believed it. From then on, she won 80% of her net points… and took the Wimbledon title."
With the Frenchman’s help, Serena won two Wimbledon titles (2012, 2015) as well as three US Opens, two French Opens, and two Australian Opens.
