Shelton Advances, Musetti Already Out: Overnight Results from Washington

Ben Shelton upheld his ranking in the early stages of the ATP 500 tournament in Washington. The world No. 8 and fourth seed got the better of Mackenzie McDonald in his opening match.
After his win against Colton Smith (6-4, 6-1), the 95th-ranked player faced the semifinalist of the last Australian Open, but the challenge proved too great. With 23 winners and no break points conceded, Shelton cruised to victory without trouble (6-3, 6-4 in 1h15) and will next face Gabriel Diallo, who upset Fabian Marozsan (6-3, 6-4).
On the other hand, Lorenzo Musetti’s campaign is already over. The ATP No. 7, still recovering from a leg injury sustained during his Roland-Garros semifinal against Carlos Alcaraz, suffered his third consecutive defeat.
After losing in the first round at Wimbledon to Nikoloz Basilashvili despite winning the first set, the Italian ultimately fell to Cameron Norrie (3-6, 6-2, 6-3). The Briton continues his strong form and will next play Brandon Nakashima, who defeated Ethan Quinn (6-3, 6-4).
In Tuesday’s action, other notable eliminations included Quentin Halys (beaten by Aleksandar Kovacevic in three sets), David Goffin (outplayed by Bu Yunchaokete), Alex Michelsen (who lost to Daniel Evans in straight sets), and Miomir Kecmanovic (upset by Zachary Svajda).
