Ben Shelton, the No. 6 seed at the US Open, kicked off his campaign with a controlled win against qualifier Ignacio Buse (6-3, 6-2, 6-4).

For the very first match of the tournament on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the organizers had decided to schedule the match of Ben Shelton, a new member of the top 10 this year and a semifinalist in New York in 2023.

The recent winner of the Toronto Masters 1000, Shelton delivered in front of his home crowd with 35 winners, 5 aces, and 79% of points won behind his first serve. He also delighted spectators with a stunning banana shot in the second set, worthy of a certain Rafael Nadal (see video below).

In the second round, the American should have some breathing room against Pablo Carreno Busta, a former semifinalist in 2017 and 2020 but now fallen to No. 137 in the world, or against qualifier Pablo Llamas Ruiz.

Among the other seeded men in action early in the day in New York, Jakub Mensik held his ground against Nicolas Jarry (7-6, 6-3, 6-4), as did Alejandro Davidovich Fokina against Alexander Shevchenko (6-1, 6-1, 6-2).

Since February 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Ukrainian sport has been heavily affected by human, structural and economic losses. Tennis has, of course, not been spared. While Ukrainian athletes have had to rethink their entire organization, an entire country, behind the scenes, has had to adapt and change its training conditions. This extends all the way to the highest level, where professional players have spoken out, trying as best they can to help their nation.

Omnipresent cameras, line judges on the verge of extinction, mistakes that persist nonetheless: technology fascinates as much as it divides. Tennis, at a crossroads, is still searching for its balance between progress and emotion.

A tennis player's income depends solely on his sporting results. In the event of injury, the daily life of those far from the Top 100 can become extremely complicated.

As we move to the end of this month and also closing out the year I am wishing all of those following me a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy New Year.

Let's make that wish for all 2000 plus players hoping for 5 wins each day. Hoping ŵhen we open the results page to see all green, and no red. And especially NO CANCELED matches.

From me and my rotti JAZ, I bid you all good night, and see you in...

why did tennis tonic void predictions on the match between Chwalinska and Huergo at the Quito tournament? The match was played to completion and on time. If TT feels the match is one sided, and of course it was, then don't put it up for prediction. This is getting irritating.

The finals are here, and we scramble for the best finish. I've been chasing "King" all year and I was able to shrink the spread a little. Skelp is also closing the gap.

Seasons best to all the regulars in our league.

Will you all be back in the new year.?

Steffi Graf completed a Golden Slam (not just a career Grand Slam) when she was 19. She is the only person to accomplish that, winning the four majors plus Olympic gold the same calendar year.
