There's plenty of suspense ahead of the huge clash between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner this Friday in the semi-finals of the French Open. The two young men, aged 21 and 22 respectively, have already faced each other 8 times on the ATP Tour. They have each won 4 times. *
In the Grand Slam, the tie is also perfect. Sinner won their Round of 16 tie at Wimbledon in 2022 (6-1, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3). The Spaniard won their legendary duel in the US Open quarter-finals, also in 2022, 6-3, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.
As for their last confrontation, Alcaraz will have the advantage, having won their semi-final at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 last March (1-6, 6-3, 6-2). The Italian was slightly injured in a fall caused by the intensity of the match.
Finally, as far as the surface is concerned, there's perhaps a slight psychological advantage for Sinner. Quite the opposite of what you might instinctively think, he won their only face-to-face meeting on clay. It was in the final of the Umag ATP 250 tournament in July 2022 (6-7, 6-1, 6-1).
As you can imagine, all this history seems to indicate that we're in for a monumental tennis clash on the Court Philippe Chatrier. Perhaps a final before its time. Join us at 2.30pm on Friday to find out.
* Alcaraz's 2019 victory over Sinner in the 1st round of the Alicante Challenger is not counted in the official head-to-heads, as it was not played on the main tour. If taken into account, the Spaniard leads 5-4.
