Sinner Overwhelms Musetti and Reaches Fifth Consecutive Grand Slam Semifinal at the US Open

On Arthur Ashe Stadium, closing out the day’s program, the final men’s singles quarterfinal featured an all-Italian duel between Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti.
The defending champion and world number one has barely been troubled in the tournament so far. Apart from losing the first set against Denis Shapovalov in the third round, the Italian has been very composed throughout the fortnight. He was coming off a swift victory against Alexander Bublik (6-1, 6-1, 6-1) in the previous round.
The task looked daunting for Musetti, and it proved to be just that. Facing a sharp and ready Sinner, the world number 10—who is having a strong season with a second Major semifinal appearance earlier this year at Roland Garros and a first Masters 1000 final in Monte Carlo—could do nothing against his compatriot in this match.
Delivering another high-quality performance, Sinner hit 28 winners (including 10 aces) against 17 unforced errors. Highly effective on break points (converting five out of six opportunities), the San Candido native did not lose his serve throughout the entire match, saving all seven break points he faced.
In the end, Sinner won in three sets (6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in 1 hour and 59 minutes). This marks the world number one’s 16th victory in as many matches against Italian players since his debut on the main tour.
With this win, the US Open defending champion reaches a Grand Slam semifinal for the eighth time in his career and the fifth consecutive time since his quarterfinal exit at Wimbledon last year against Daniil Medvedev.
For a spot in the final—which would be his sixth in this category of tournaments since the start of last season—he will face Félix Auger-Aliassime, who earlier in the day defeated Alex De Minaur.
