By winning his first-round match in Monte-Carlo against Arnaldi (6-3, 4-6, 6-4), Gasquet once again pushed the boundaries of age. Like his compatriot Gaël Monfils, the Frenchman has advanced to the second round at 38 years old.
This victory is symbolic, as it comes 23 years after his first win in the Principality. He will face Altmaier for a spot in the round of 16.
With this win, the Béziers native joins the list of the oldest players to win a match in a Masters 1000 tournament.
Karlovic holds the top spot (40 years and 11 days), followed by Connors (39 years and 194 days) and Wawrinka (39 years and 189 days).
Gasquet ranks 6th, ahead of Monfils (38 years and 218 days) and behind Haas (39 years and 43 days).
