Ugo Humbert did not approach his first-round match in Monte-Carlo against Alexei Popyrin in the best way, due to a finger injury sustained while trying to remove his t-shirt.
However, the injury did not seem to bother him too much, as he won the first set 6-3.
He then faltered in the second-set tie-break, losing it 7-2. In the third set, Popyrin seized the opportunities and broke the Frenchman, ultimately winning 3-6, 7-6, 6-4.
This early defeat for Humbert will have ranking consequences, as the Frenchman will drop out of the Top 20 next week, having had a quarterfinal to defend in Monte-Carlo.
