Just a few days after announcing that she was calling time on her 2024 season, Elina Svitolina announced on social media that she had undergone surgery on her foot.

An injury that had handicapped her for almost two years.

As determined as ever to return stronger than ever, Svitolina declared: "Unfortunately, my 2024 season is now a thing of the past, as I underwent foot surgery today to correct a long-standing problem that I've been trying to manage throughout this year.

It's the same problem that ended my season in 2023 and hampered me for most of 2024.

It's become harder to manage and it's impacted me more and more, not just in terms of tennis and training, but also in my everyday life.

But now I'm looking forward to the opportunity to focus on my recovery and come back even stronger than before.

I'm determined to do whatever it takes to get back on the court and compete at the highest level.

I'd like to thank you all for your support and encouragement during this difficult time."
