Swiatek: "If I play well, I know I'll be number 1 in the world again".

Swiatek: If I play well, I know I'll be number 1 in the world again.

Iga Swiatek defeated Rebecca Sramkova 6-0, 6-2 at the Australian Open on Thursday.

In the post-match press conference, a journalist asked her if she was concerned about not being world number 1.

She replied: "I remember that for the last two years, I started as world number 1, so I felt I had to show my best from the start of the season.

There was a lot of pressure at the beginning of the year, but in 2024, I didn't think much about it.

I realized that sometimes I didn't have 100% influence over what happened to my ranking, so now I just concentrate on my tennis.

If I play well, I know I'll be world number 1 again. If I don't, and Aryna plays better, she will.

I think the smartest thing is to concentrate on tennis; the ranking will come later."

She faces Emma Raducanu in the third round.
