Tennis loses one of its legends: "A real gem".
On Tuesday, our sport lost one of its historic representatives, as Neale Fraser, three-time Major champion, winner of 200 singles titles and Australia's Davis Cup captain for 23 years (1970-1993), died.
Shortly after the news broke, one of his compatriots, the legendary Rod Laver, paid tribute to a player and man he knew very well: "It is with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of my dear friend and fellow left-hander, Neale Fraser. He was a true gem in the golden age of Australian tennis legends - an incredible world number one, a Grand Slam champion and a Davis Cup icon.
Neale beat me in two major finals, pushing me to become a better player. My deepest condolences to Thea and Neale's extended family. I'll miss you dearly, buddy. Rest in peace."
