"That's a change happening at a complicated time," Monfils makes an important announcement before the French Open
Gaël Monfils will participate in his 20th French Open this year. For his opening match, he will face Hugo Dellien, ranked 96th in the world.
During the media day held on Friday, Monfils, who has had a challenging clay-court season (2 wins, withdrawals in Munich, Madrid, and Rome), announced that he has parted ways with his coach Mikael Tillström:
"I'd like to take this opportunity to announce a change: I've ended my collaboration with my coach. I hesitated to announce it on my social media, but I thought it would be better in a press conference.
Naturally, it's a change happening at a complicated time. Before the French Open, it's never easy. But I'm training pretty well, I feel good about it and rather relaxed. I hope it goes well for the first match."
Tillström and Monfils had first worked together from 2015 to 2018, before reuniting again in 2023. The world No. 42 will now be accompanied by Andrew Beetles, the coach of his wife, Elina Svitolina.
