Alexander Bublik made his debut on Thursday in Gstaad. Facing Alexander Shevchenko, the Kazakh player won 6-2, 6-3.
Eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon, Bublik chose the clay courts of Gstaad to bounce back.
Interviewed by the ATP after his victory, he said: "It's a beautiful place, but the conditions for playing tennis are not optimal. The ball flies a bit, so I'm really glad I arrived early last Saturday to prepare.
The match wasn't easy mentally. I played against a compatriot, a player I share the Davis Cup team with, so I was a bit nervous, but I stayed focused and took my chances. I'm very happy with that."
Bublik will face Francisco Comesana this Friday for a spot in the semifinals.
