The start of a renaissance for Shapovalov in Madrid?
He's one of the most talented players on the planet. He may also be one of the main frustrations of modern tennis. Denis Shapovalov, 25, is attempting a comeback this year. After a thunderous start to his career (semi-finalist at Montreal 2017, beating Rafael Nadal in the round of 16), the Canadian has had his ups and downs. Indeed, since his semi-final at Wimbledon 2021, the left-hander hasn't really made a name for himself.
Back from injury this season, Shapovalov has yet to achieve very satisfactory results. Before arriving in Madrid, he hadn't won many matches (6 wins in 15 matches). That said, the Caja Magica seems to be giving him a boost. Not at his most comfortable on clay, the high altitude so particular to Madrid offers much more favorable conditions for the Canadian's puncher's game. After his first win over Diaz Acosta, ranked 47th in the world (6-4, 3-6, 6-3), the 25-year-old followed up his victory over surface specialist Tomas Martin Etcheverry, ranked 27th in the world (7-6, 6-3).
Down to 132nd in the world, Shapovalov could even return to the top 100 if he wins in the third round (where he will face the winner of the match between Alexander Zverev and Borna Coric).
