"There is still money to be made," says Stephens on prize money increase at the US Open
With $90 million distributed across the entire tournament, the US Open will award the largest prize purse in tennis history. When asked about it, American player Sloane Stephens stated that this increase is a good start but that there is still much to do to achieve a fairer balance:
"There are still opportunities. We are working toward that. I think the Grand Slam tournaments have a lot of influence over what happens and the amount allocated to us. These things take a lot of time.
It’s a very balanced business relationship, but we are far from getting 50%. So, to be able to increase prize money and achieve a slightly fairer balance, I think that’s what we’re aiming for."
For context, while the singles champions will receive the largest sum ever given to players ($5 million each), other rounds, including qualifying, have also seen increases.
