US Open Mixed Doubles: Navarro Withdraws for Monterrey, Leaving Sinner Without a Partner; Boulter and De Minaur Will Not Participate
The new mixed doubles competition introduced by the US Open is fast approaching.
In three days, the world's top players will gather to compete for the lucrative $1 million prize.
However, the event continues to see last-minute pair changes.
Emma Navarro, initially partnered with Jannik Sinner, has decided to withdraw. Struggling with confidence (third-round exit in Montreal and second-round exit in Cincinnati) and ahead of defending a semifinal run in New York, the American has opted to compete at the WTA 500 in Monterrey instead.
The world No. 1, currently in the semifinals in Cincinnati, is now left without a partner. He has until tomorrow to confirm his participation and form a new pairing. The decision will likely depend on the outcome of his match today against Terence Atmane. If he wins, he would play the final in Ohio on Monday, effectively ruling him out of the mixed doubles, which begins Tuesday.
Among other changes, Paula Badosa (injured) and Tommy Paul have also withdrawn. Jessica Pegula, who was initially paired with Paul, has chosen to team up with Jack Draper, who was originally set to play with Badosa.
Finally, engaged couple Katie Boulter and Alex De Minaur will not participate. Despite publicly campaigning for a spot on social media, the British world No. 50 has opted to play at the WTA 250 in Cleveland, where she received a wild card.
