"These two days will be very important for the future of doubles," Vavassori stated after winning the US Open alongside Errani.
The "Forza Italia" chants echoed for the second consecutive year on Arthur Ashe Stadium in mixed doubles. Already crowned last year in the discipline, Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori triumphed in the new format introduced by the US Open against the pair Iga Swiatek/Casper Ruud.
In a press conference, Vavassori reacted to this new Major title won with his 38-year-old compatriot (the third in mixed doubles after the 2024 US Open and 2025 Roland-Garros).
"This evening was incredible, the atmosphere was absolutely crazy. The final match was insane, the level was very high. There were many beautiful points, many highlights.
These two days of competition will be very important for the future of doubles, and especially mixed doubles, because we showed that doubles players are also top-tier players.
In the past, many legends played doubles. It's important to know that in the future, this discipline is a product that can grow. With better marketing strategy, it could become something even bigger.
For us, it was very important to play. I must say the initiative was significant because it truly represented the idea that doubles can become something more developed.
If we hadn’t had the opportunity to play, I would have been angry. Last year was incredible for both of us with Sara (Errani). It’s an interesting initiative for the sport.
But, in the future, we will have to give our best to allow doubles to continue growing. Perhaps instead of having a draw of sixteen pairs, there could be thirty-two, with an additional round," Vavassori assured Punto de Break.
