"We are playing for all the doubles players who cannot compete here," says Vavassori after his US Open quarterfinal
Last year's champions, the Vavassori-Errani pair will attempt once again to win the mixed doubles trophy at Flushing Meadows, but this time under a completely new format created by the organizers.
Having advanced to the semifinals after their victories against Fritz-Rybakina (4-2, 4-2) and then Muchova-Rublev (4-1, 7-4), the Italian team will face the American pair composed of Collins and Harrison.
"We are playing for all the doubles players who cannot compete here. We will do our best. We have already accomplished one mission: that of playing. That wasn't a given either. We are playing very well, and the most important match was the first one against two good singles players. Nothing is taken for granted; we are a very united duo and we know each other well.
It's always a pleasure to play with Sara; the intensity is always very high. The second match was difficult, and I think it was spectacular. It's a great showcase for mixed doubles, and we hope to continue like that tomorrow," Vavassori stated in an interview shared by Tennis World Italia.
As a reminder, the US Open has chosen to rely primarily on singles stars rather than the usual doubles specialists on the tour.
