This is a Grand Slam, not an exhibition," the US Open director sets the record straight regarding mixed doubles
The US Open mixed doubles will conclude overnight from Wednesday to Thursday with the semifinals followed by the final.
Four pairs can still dream of a first Grand Slam title in the discipline, although the format has been completely changed and the term "exhibition" comes up very frequently, as seen in Jack Draper's statements after his qualification into the final four alongside Jessica Pegula.
For the media outlet Tennis.com, US Open director Stacey Allaster defended the decision to change the competition format and prioritize tennis stars instead of specialists:
"Let’s be extremely clear: this is a Grand Slam, not an exhibition. We understand the doubles specialists who are not pleased with this change. But we know that when fans see the best players competing, it will encourage them not only to watch tennis but also to play it. And that will benefit the growth of the sport.
