Tsitsipas Knocked Out in Second Round by Gigante
Finalist in 2021 and quarterfinalist in the last two editions, Stefanos Tsitsipas was sent packing in the second round this Wednesday, defeated by qualifier Matteo Gigante in four sets (6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4).
The Greek, who had already dropped out of the top 10 in early April, will face an even steeper fall in the rankings, as he is now virtually ranked 25th in the world.
Gigante, ranked 167th globally and already victorious in four matches (including qualifiers), boldly seized his opportunity and became the first qualifier to defeat a former Roland-Garros finalist since Eduardo Schwank in 2008 against Carlos Moya.
This also marks his first career win against a top-20 player, in addition to achieving his best Grand Slam result yet. Gigante will attempt to confirm his breakthrough in the third round against Ben Shelton.
As for Tsitsipas, he confirms that he still hasn’t found the key to returning to his best form, having won only two matches in the last four Grand Slams.
