Tsitsipas tried to "copy" Alcaraz during the Laver Cup
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Carlos Alcaraz, opponents throughout the season, were teammates for a weekend at the Laver Cup 2024 (September 20-22). The two men defended the colors of Team Europe and beat Team World, who had won the last two editions.
The Greek took advantage of the opportunity to observe the Spaniard's tennis from the sidelines, and to try and learn from his strengths. This is what he told ATP on the sidelines of the Tokyo tournament (ATP 500), where he will play his first round match this Thursday.
Stefanos Tsitsipas: "I've been watching Carlos. It's as if seeing him from this angle is so different from watching him on television or in any other type of competition. I don't really have the opportunity to be so close and intimate with another top player like him. He's one of the best players in the world at the moment, he's won two Grand Slam titles this year and for me, he's an example.
I really want to follow in his footsteps and seeing him play live and seeing what kind of patterns, what kind of behaviors and what kind of body language he shows on court is definitely something I try to copy and introduce into my own game. For me, the Laver Cup is not just a team experience, it's also a bonding experience.
It's also like we're constantly trying to figure things out together, and I think that adds a lot of depth. You see things you don't usually see."
