Two players warned by the WTA after their controversial publications on China
In October, Paula Badosa found herself at the heart of a controversy in China after posting a photo in which she mimed slant-eyed.
Magda Linette, for her part, published a photo of Wuhan with the description "The virus database has been updated", referring to the Covid-19 pandemic that had been discovered there.
Both players were quickly accused of racism following these publications.
Almost two months after the controversy, journalist James Gray revealed that the WTA had sent a warning to the two players to be careful in future about their use of social networks.
And the reason for the warning is obvious: "The WTA can't afford to take the generosity of its hosts for granted: Chinese tournaments this year accounted for almost 15 million euros in earnings on the women's tour this year," explained Gray.
