US Open: Ruud Falls Hard Against World No. 107

Casper Ruud, the 2022 finalist in New York, was sent packing in the second round, defeated by Raphaël Collignon after a five-set battle (6-4, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5).
Ruud’s Grand Slam season ends on a bitter note. Eliminated in the second round of the Australian Open and Roland-Garros, then withdrawing from Wimbledon, Ruud was counting on the US Open to finish his Major campaign with a positive run.
After a solid win over Sebastian Ofner two days ago, the Norwegian faced Raphael Collignon today, the world No. 107 who was competing in the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. Initially unsettled by the Belgian, Ruud turned the tide and found himself one set away from victory.
Despite 61 unforced errors and 17 double faults, Collignon continued to fight back, snatching the final set on the Grandstand. He lost his opening service game in the decisive set, but Ruud, still uncertain, immediately gave the break back.
Just before the tie-break, the world No. 107 accelerated, securing the break and then closing out the match on his third opportunity.
Several months after earning his first ATP Tour win in Marrakech, Collignon claimed the biggest victory of his career. He will now compete for a spot in the second week of the US Open against Jiri Lehecka.
Disappointing in this 2025 season, with his only standout result being a first Masters 1000 title in Madrid, Ruud will have very few points to defend in the coming weeks, having won only two matches between the US Open and the ATP Finals in 2024.
