Vagnozzi, Sinner's Coach: "You Must Always Innovate, Otherwise You Become Predictable"
On the eve of his match against Tallon Griekspoor in Shanghai, Jannik Sinner, with the support of his coach, is exploring technical adjustments to remain unpredictable on the court.
For his debut at the Shanghai Masters 1000, Jannik Sinner, fresh off his title at the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing, dominated Daniel Altmaier (6-3, 6-3) and qualified for the third round where he will face Tallon Griekspoor this Sunday in the evening session.
The coach of the world number 2, Simone Vagnozzi, reflected on his protégé's recent weeks and stated that he has attempted to change certain aspects of Sinner's game, particularly following the loss in the US Open final against a Carlos Alcaraz in top form.
"In my opinion, the loss in the US Open final wasn't that surprising. At that moment, Carlos (Alcaraz) was psychologically, physically, and tennis-wise better than Jannik (Sinner).
But we must not forget that he also went through five difficult months, and it's strange that today, people are trying to portray Jannik as a player in crisis, when he has won two Grand Slam tournaments and reached the final in every tournament he played except Halle.
He is achieving incredible things. Of course, like everyone, we are always looking to improve.
Regarding technical adjustments, you know, I am sometimes surprised by how much certain things are discussed.
At times, something works, at others less so. In the United States, Jannik wasn't serving very well, and we made some adjustments: the movement changed the day before we arrived in China. In the first days in Beijing, he adapted, and then he served very well.
Of course, you must always innovate in your game, otherwise you become predictable. That doesn't mean Sinner has to become a serve-and-volley tennis player. There are other variations too, like being even more aggressive on return of serve. It's simply an improvement; I don't see anything surprising about it," Vagnozzi elaborated to Tribuna.
