Video - Sinner Congratulates Paolini After Her Semifinal Qualification in Rome
Before the rain disrupted much of the schedule in Rome on Tuesday afternoon, Jasmine Paolini managed to turn around a seemingly dire situation in the women's quarterfinals against Diana Shnaider.
Trailing 6-7, 0-4, the Italian, who was struggling early on, relied on the crowd's support to eventually secure the win (6-7, 6-4, 6-2). Paolini will now face either Svitolina or Stearns in the semifinals.
Upon returning to the locker room, the world No. 5 crossed paths with Jannik Sinner, who was set to follow his compatriot on Centre Court against Francisco Cerundolo.
However, rain soon intervened, and play has yet to resume (no restart before 7 p.m.), but Sinner and Paolini exchanged smiles and greetings (see video below).
The first Italian woman to reach the semifinals in Rome since Sara Errani eleven years ago, Paolini will hope to be emulated by the ATP world No. 1, as well as Lorenzo Musetti, another Italian player still in the tournament. At the time of the interruption, the world No. 9 had earned a match point against Daniil Medvedev.
