Video - Tense End to the Match Between Bellucci and Dzumhur in Madrid
This Thursday, during the first round of the Madrid Masters 1000, Mattia Bellucci and Damir Dzumhur faced off. The Bosnian player, now ranked 63rd in the world, turned the match around against the Italian, winning in three sets after a hard-fought battle (4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in 2 hours and 34 minutes).
With this victory, Dzumhur earned the right to face Sebastian Baez for a spot in the round of 16. However, the match was marked by tension between the two players.
Bellucci hit an underarm serve that turned into an ace, but Dzumhur, furious, challenged the call, arguing that he wasn’t ready to play and wasn’t looking at his opponent during the serve.
Ultimately, the decision stood, and the chair umpire awarded the point to the Italian, who is currently ranked 66th in the ATP rankings.
At the end of the match, after the final point, the two players approached the net for the customary handshake. Dzumhur stepped forward first, but Bellucci refused to shake his hand. When the Italian then turned back, the Bosnian ignored his gesture in return.
The two players eventually shook the umpire’s hand before returning to their respective chairs (see video below). These two won’t be vacationing together anytime soon.
