Video - The Beautiful Moment Between Shevchenko and Erhard After the Match Point
Despite the rain that disrupted much of the Roland-Garros qualifying program this Wednesday, several matches were able to reach their conclusion in the second round.
Thus, Alexander Shevchenko, the second seed in this qualifying draw and the 97th player in the world, prevailed in a suspenseful match against Mathys Erhard on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
Invited by the organizers, the 23-year-old Frenchman, ranked 268th in the world, did more than just resist the Kazakh player, even leading by a break in the third and final set.
But ultimately, and despite a 5-2 lead in the super tie-break, it was Shevchenko who emerged victorious (3-6, 6-3, 7-6). Physically exhausted, Erhard collapsed on the court after the match point.
Unable to stand up, the Frenchman saw his opponent come to his aid to help him up after this 2 hour 47 minute battle (see video below). A beautiful display of sportsmanship that was met with applause from the spectators on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.
Shevchenko, who was eliminated in the second round of the main draw by Corentin Moutet last year in the Paris Grand Slam, is now just one step away from passing the qualifiers and will face Filip Misolic in the coming hours.
