"We celebrated this title even more," Sinner reflects on the gala with Swiatek at Wimbledon
Wimbledon hosted a gala just hours after the tournament ended to celebrate its two singles champions. Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek left with the trophies following their respective victories over Carlos Alcaraz (4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4) and Amanda Anisimova (6-0, 6-0). As tradition dictates, the two players were spotted dancing together.
The Italian later reflected on the evening, revealing that he and the Polish player discussed their positive doping tests (Sinner for clostebol and Swiatek for trimetazidine) last year, which had sparked controversy in the tennis world. Questions were raised about the confidentiality of the governing bodies in handling both cases and the perceived disparity in treatment compared to other previously sanctioned players.
"We talked about it, and in a way, we celebrated this title even more because it was very tough for both of us. Only I, my team, and my closest people know exactly how it went, and I think the same applies to Iga’s (Swiatek) circle.
There will always be people who believe in you and others who don’t, but that’s true in general. So yes, in a way, this victory is very special because the last four or five months have been extremely stressful," the ATP world No. 1 told Tennis World Italia in recent hours.
