We still have to respect the players; we’re not animals," Halys reflects on the incident between Rune and a spectator

Eliminated just short of the round of 16 at Roland-Garros, Halys spoke at a press conference. The Frenchman notably addressed the incident that occurred between his opponent and a spectator during the match. Indeed, frustrated at 5-5 in the third set after losing his service game, Rune threw his towel toward the side of the court, which led to an exchange with a spectator and the latter’s ejection, requested by the Dane.
"I didn’t see the scene; I was too far away to judge. But I think that, in general, there needs to be a form of respect. I feel like players are usually quite calm with the crowd. Sure, some are more nervous than others, and it’s still good for tennis to see players express themselves. But I believe we still have to respect the players. We’re not animals.
We’re doing our best. Sometimes there are ups and downs. I feel like sports betting isn’t necessarily helping right now, and unfortunately, we see a lot of people in the crowd expressing their emotions when they lose their bets. We’re not responsible for all that.
We try to win, to create emotions for the crowd. So I think the crowd can also do a little better, and it’ll be better for the sport and everyone if the distance remains appropriate and if everyone respects what the other is doing.
