"What makes me the happiest is no longer needing a wildcard to play in tournaments," Osaka's statement after her win over Gauff
After defeating world number 3 Gauff in a solid match (6-3, 6-2), Osaka has found new momentum in a tournament she has won twice before (2018 and 2020). In the post-match press conference, the Japanese player described how she has been experiencing her recent performances.
"I was very frustrated for a long time because I felt like I was playing well, but something was missing. Maybe it was just a matter of mentality.
Then I played against Samsonova (second round in Montreal), I didn't give up until the last point and ended up winning. I think from that moment on, I just tried to be the best fighter I could be. It's uncharted territory at this stage of my career, and I'm having a lot of fun.
If you ask me what's most exciting today, it's that I no longer need a wildcard to play in tournaments. I'll be seeded in tournaments like Indian Wells or Miami, so that's what makes me happy."
In the next round, she will face the 11th seed, Muchova.
