"When I play like this, I wonder what I'm doing here," Monfils reflects on his first-round loss in Washington
Gaël Monfils was eliminated in the first round of Washington by Yibing Wu with a straight-set score of 6-3, 6-1.
In comments shared by *We Love Tennis*, he addressed his defeat: "You're right, I played very poorly, I was absolutely terrible. But that’s not why I’m going to stop fighting.
Me too, when I play like this, I’ll say it openly—I ask myself, ‘What the hell am I doing here?’ I’m furious. I’m far from my daughter. I could have been on vacation with my wife and my daughter.
You always think we have it good. Yes, we have good conditions, but that’s just material. I’m here, playing a match like this, and I’m furious. I’m wasting my time.
I see that I’m playing very badly and can’t do anything right. It’s the truth. I’ll go back to training. Try to figure out how to serve better, return better, play better.
But don’t think I’m here telling myself, ‘Life is great.’ Far from it. This loss sucks…"
Monfils will return to the court at the Toronto Masters 1000.
